Pan Pacific Orchard, Singapore
Project Summary
Pan Pacific Orchard (PPO) is an urban retreat located in Singapore, renowned for its luxurious accommodations and innovative green architecture. Beyond its role as a hotel, PPO features a variety of landscaped terraces and greenery that provide habitat for diverse flora and fauna.
Commissioned by WOHA, bioSEA conducted an ecological assessment to study the biodiversity, connectivity, and environmental benefits of Pan Pacific Orchard’s green spaces. The study evaluated the site’s ecological value through biodiversity surveys, temperature analyses, and greenery perception feedback, aiming to support sustainable development, conservation, and better management of PPO’s natural assets.
The biodiversity assessment showed that PPO supports a diverse range of species, with improvements over built baselines but fewer species than nearby park baselines. The Forest Terrace, including a bio-pond, was the most biodiverse area on the property. Using bioSEA & WOHA’s Nature-Centric Design Framework, the study identified PPO’s score as ‘Very high’ in the biodiversity scoring index.
Temperature reduction analyses, supported by iButton measurements and ENVI-met simulations, showed the role of greenery in reducing urban heat. The Forest Terrace and other green areas helped mitigate temperature fluctuations and thermal discomfort, especially at pedestrian heights, enhancing the property’s microclimate.
Guest, visitor, and staff feedback on greenery emphasized the importance of biophilic design in urban settings. Many respondents noted that the greenery and water features improved their experience, air quality, and temperature. Popular spaces like the Beach and Garden Terraces were especially praised for their design and functionality.
This assessment highlights PPO’s commitment to ecological sustainability and urban greenery, setting a standard for environmentally conscious hospitality design. It emphasizes the value of preserving biodiversity, enhancing ecological connectivity, and prioritizing nature-inspired solutions to balance built and natural environments.
