Shah Alam Stadium, Malaysia

Project Summary
The Shah Alam Sports Complex (Kompleks Sukan Shah Alam) project in Selangor, Malaysia will replace the old Shah Alam Stadium with a new modern stadium, several sports facilities, and various natural spaces. These natural green and blue spaces seek to provide recreational, biodiversity, and flood mitigation benefits. To advance these goals, bioSEA is supporting the project as the ecology and biomimicry design consultant.
As part of the project, bioSEA conducted a rapid biodiversity assessment of the site to gather baseline information on the different habitat types and the wildlife that inhabit these areas. This allowed a comparative assessment of the different habitat types planned, and the potential biodiversity gains of creating new habitats was quantified using a habitat units framework. The team also predicted the potential wildlife species that could be expected on site as the habitat types are developed in the near-future and as they mature further in the longer term. Various species of conservation significance were expected in the site in the future, highlighting the potential role of the new development on biodiversity conservation.
Alongside fauna species, trees on the site were also assessed, and recommendations were provided regarding preserving, transplanting and replacing them based on their biodiversity value and their potential invasiveness. A lighting strategy was developed for the landscape, recognising the competing needs of people using the spaces and the negative effects of artificial life on wildlife. These insights and recommendations will help ensure that the site maximises its biodiversity benefits and serves as an engaging public space for visitors.
